Treating Dry Eyes
If you find your eyes are itchy and scratchy, you may be suffering from dry eye syndrome. It is estimated that one out of three people will have some form of dry eye during their lifetime. Here in Arizona, our dry climate can contribute to the problem, as can spending too much time working at a computer screen. Left untreated, dry eye syndrome has the potential to become a chronic problem.
At 20/20 Image Eye Centers, we have helped hundreds of our neighbors in Chandler, Fountain Hills, Glendale, Scottsdale and Tempe get relief from the discomfort of dry eyes. It all starts with a comprehensive eye exam and a consultation with one of our experienced eye doctors to help pinpoint the cause of your discomfort.
What Causes Dry Eyes?
Dry eye syndrome occurs when the eye is unable to produce enough tears or produces a poor quality tear that evaporates too quickly. Dry spots can appear on the surface of the eye resulting in itching, burning, redness, a gritty sensation and, in some cases, blurred vision.
There are many causes of dry eye, including:
- Gland dysfunction
- Medications, including antihistamines
- Prolonged exposure to computer screens
- Contact lenses
- Sleep apnea
- Poor nutrition
- Age or gender
Dry Eye Treatment
Treatment for dry eyes usually consists of lubricating eye drops or oral medications and supplements to help restore the natural balance of your own tears. Using warm compresses and massaging the eyelids can also help increase tear flow. Severe cases of dry eyes may require the use of a punctal plug, a small medical device inserted to block the tear duct and prevent drainage of liquid from the eye.
